Vietnam Largest City Continues $1.3B WB-funded Sanitation Project

Authorities in Vietnam’s southern metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City will carry out the second phase of a water sanitation project costing VND27 trillion ($1.28 billion) with partial funding from the World Bank. The project focuses on building a wastewater treatment plant, stone embankment along a canal system, and breakwater in the Saigon River to prevent flood for an area of 15,000 hectares. Flood control has cost Ho Chi Minh City roughly VND57.8 trillion ($2.75 billion) so far, five times the figure approved in 2008. However, the situation has not improved much due to serious impact of climate change. (Tuoi Tre – Youth March 13 p2)
