Vietnam Lowers Abandoned Scrap Containers to 10,102, down 51% YTD

Vietnam’s customs authorities had managed to reduce the number of abandoned scrap containers at ports by 51.8% to 10,102 at mid-September, from the end of 2018, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, an arm of the Ministry of Finance. As of the end of June, Vietnam had re-sent over 500 containers of scraps abroad, which were declared on manifest as being ineligible for imports to the country. Recently, experts have fanned concerns over the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE)’s proposal to destroy imported scraps that do not meet environmental standards if shipping lines fail to ship them back to the country of origin within 30 days, as it may turn Vietnam into the world’s landfill.
