Vietnam Mekong Delta Grappling with Peak Saltwater Intrusion in Mar, Apr

Saltwater intrusion in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region- the country’s bowl of rice, will continue to worsen in March and April, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorology Forecasting said. The peak will come during high tide on March 12-16, March 27-April 1, April 9-14 and April 24- 30. The delta is facing a higher than normal level of saltwater intrusion from the sea through river mouths in the ongoing dry season. However, it is not as severe as the level of the previous dry season. In the 2019-2020 dry season, drought and saltwater intrusion hit 58,400 hectares of paddy and 25,120 hectares of orchards in the delta. A total of 96,000 households have faced difficulties related to daily water supply. (Vietnam Plus, en.Vietnam Plus)
