Vietnam Ministry, Int’l Organization Sign MoU to Boost Migrant Health

On September 18, Vietnam's Ministry of Health and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation, improve the health and quality of life for migrants, and ensure their access to national healthcare systems and policies.

The agreement marked nearly 40 years (1980-2024) of collaboration between the IOM and the Ministry of Health.

Addressing the signing ceremony in Hanoi, Chief of Mission for IOM in Vietnam Park Mi-Hyung highlighted that the partnership plays a crucial role in safeguarding the health and well-being of migrants, aligning with the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In recent years, IOM Vietnam has implemented various initiatives to improve migrant health. These include a cross-border tuberculosis control program and training 200 healthcare workers from Vietnam and Cambodia to use the District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2).

Additionally, the establishment of the Migrant Health Working Group (MHWG) has helped manage migrant health and develop comprehensive healthcare policies. Through this group, IOM has provided health education to over 23,500 Vietnamese workers in Japan and South Korea via the Health Handbook for Vietnamese Working Abroad.
