Vietnam North Province to Build VND417B Waste Treatment Plant

Vietnam’s northern province of Thai Binh will start building a waste treatment plant worth VND417 billion ($19.85 million) in efforts to cope with the rising environment pollution. Located on a site of 22 hectares in Thai Binh City’s Dong My commune, the facility with advanced technology is designed to treat 250-300 tons of waste per day. The plant is expected to convert waste into microorganism fertilizer serving agriculture production in the province. In fact, most of solid waste across Vietnam is mainly buried at waste disposal sites and each urban area in the country has only one or two waste dumps and 85% of urban areas apply waste disposal measures failing to meet the standards, posing a great threat to the environment and community health. Vietnam is likely to dump 44 million tons of solid waste per year in 2015 from 28 million in 2008,  expert said, urging concerned agencies to minimize solid waste at the source, boost recycling and utilize new environmentally-friendly technologies to protect the environment. Solid waste treatment is estimated to cost Vietnam VND2.34 trillion ($111.42 million) per year and the figure is likely to reach VND3.9 trillion per year in the next years. (Vietnamplus.vn Feb 14)
