Vietnam to Pilot Korean, German Languages as Primary Foreign Language

Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) will pilot a scheme of teaching Korean and German languages as the primary foreign language for students from grade 3 (third class of primary school) to 12 (the highest grade at high school), state media reported. Per the scheme, Korean and German languages will be taught for students from grades three to 12 within the ten-year roadmap. However, students are still allowed to choose any language from the list of primary foreign languages, including English, Russian, French, Japanese, and Chinese, Head of the MoET’s Department of Secondary Education Nguyen Xuan Thanh informed. He clarified that Korean and German languages are additional choices on the list. After the piloting period, the two languages may be taught as the primary foreign language at Vietnamese high schools, Mr. Thanh added. Earlier, the MoET also put the Korean language into the list of the second foreign language, which is optional and can be learned depending on students’ demands and schools’ conditions.
