Vietnam Records 41K Children with Congenital Disabilities Annually
Vietnam records over 41,000 children with congenital disabilities annually, with 20,000 children diagnosed with severe defects detectable through ultrasound, indicating one birth of a child with severe congenital defects every 30 minutes, experts said.
Experts announced the figures at the second annual prenatal medicine conference on May 30-31. The event featured 500 delegates, including leading experts from France, Hong Kong (China), Israel, and Vietnam. This year's conference focused on congenital neurological disabilities, a broad theme encompassing various disciplines such as diagnostic imaging, obstetrics, genetics, and neonatology.
In Vietnam, prenatal medicine receives increasing attention for its crucial role in screening and diagnosing fetal abnormalities, treating certain fetal conditions in utero, and screening for complications in expectant mothers, noted Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of the Central Obstetrics Hospital.
In 2023, Vietnam also successfully hosted its inaugural prenatal medicine conference, which concentrated on cardiac-related issues. (Suc Khoe Doi Song)
