Vietnam Seeks to Promote Growth of Math Ecosystem: Politburo Member

Vietnam has sought to receive more attention and promote the growth of a math ecosystem in the country, said Politburo member Nguyen Thien Nhan at the summary meeting for the national key program to develop mathematics in 2020-2021 and a celebration for Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics’ tenth anniversary. During the meeting in Hanoi City on December 23, participants reviewed the development of Mathematics in the last ten years. From 2010 to 2020, Vietnam received 315 turns of foreign scientists from 27 countries and 76 overseas Vietnamese scientists. Mathematics of Vietnam has improved by 15 places, standing at the ranking of 30th-40th in the world and leading the ASEAN bloc for the number of international publications, said Associate Professor Le Minh Ha, chief executive officer of the VIASM. Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha stressed the need for mathematics in the digital transformation period as well as encouragement on universities to open more applied mathematics majors. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued a decision on the “national key program for developing Mathematics from 2021 to 2030,” aiming to have at least five universities teaching mathematics among the top 500 global by 2030.
