Vietnam Son La Hit by Biggest-ever Earthquake within Last 10 Years

Vietnam’s northern province of Son La has been stricken by a 5.3-magnitude earthquake, the biggest of its kinds in the locality within the past ten years, local media cited Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, head of the Vietnam Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, under the Institute of Geophysics (IGP), as saying. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 14 kilometers at around 12:14 am on July 27 and posed a level-four risk of natural disaster at the epicenter area. Many residents in several buildings in Hanoi reported that they strongly felt a tremor. Assoc. Prof.-Dr. Cao Dinh Trieu, head of the Institute for Applied Geophysics, confirmed that the quake triggered aftershocks that shook buildings in Hanoi and measured at no damaging level.
