Vietnam Trains Bizs on Greenhouse Gas Measurement with USAID Support
Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) held a training workshop on August 20 to guide businesses in greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), local media reported.
Supported by USAID’s Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program II (V-LEEP II), the workshop is part of Vietnam’s efforts to reduce emissions and comply with international standards, such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam Giang, director general of the MoIT’s Department of Energy Saving and Sustainable Development, stressed the need for comprehensive solutions in the Industry and Trade sector, including clean energy and energy efficiency, to meet the country’s climate commitments. She added that the country should also apply green economy and circular economy measures.
Ms. Giang further noted that national and local authorities and businesses must establish systems to comply with regulations on MRV. This is essential for controlling emissions and meeting international carbon reduction standards, especially in markets with carbon border adjustments such as the EU’s CBAM, which affects industries like fertilizers, steel, cement, and aluminum.
Improving the capacity for GHG emission reduction verification and inventory in the Industry and Trade sector will be critical for Vietnam’s participation in the carbon market in the future, she said.
USAID experts presented methodologies for calculating GHG emissions and compiling reports, while attendees practiced these skills.
By 2030, Vietnam aims to reduce GHG emissions by 15.8%, which can be expanded to 43.5% with international support.
