UNOSAT and IGAD to strengthen East Africa DRR capacity using new GEODRR approach
19 April 2003, Nairobi, Kenya - UNOSAT and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have started the implementation of their new DRR partnership project with one inaugural training course on Geographic Information Systems for Disaster Risk Reduction. The two-week course was hosted at the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi and ended today. The training forms part of a larger UNOSAT-IGAD partnership project on the use of geospatial technologies to improve DRR in East Africa. The initiative is supported by the government of Norway. Norway has been collaborating with UNOSAT in the area of DRR also in South East Asia since 2010.

Disaster Managers complete GIS master training at UNOSAT
4 April 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - For the third consecutive year, UNOSAT expert trainers have shared their experience and knowledge with the students of the Master of Disaster Management of the University of Copenhagen. Like the previous editions, the three week intensive course on "Geo-information in disaster situations" was designed to provide disaster management experts with the skills and know-how to work with basic GIS tools for producing situation maps in the context of a disaster event.

European Commission top Scientific Adviser and UNOSAT Manager discuss technology applications
2 April, Geneva, Switzerland - Professor Anne Glover holds an important position at the European Commission: she is the first Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the Commission. Her office was established in 2011 by Mr Barroso with the mandate to provide analysis and independent expert opinions, advise on novel science, technology and innovation issues arising both in the context of the EU and internationally, and to communicate the scientific values of the European Union and its member states. Ms Glover, who is a biologist by training and had served as top scientific advisor for the Scottish government before joining the Commission, visited UNOSAT on 26 March where she discussed with the Manager Einar Bjorgo and his team the current use of satellite technology and UNITAR applied research plans. She also met with UNITAR Executive Director to round up her first visit to the Institute.

New technology applications benefit emergency services
March 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - UNOSAT is constantly partnering with public and private ventures to research new applications of geospatial technology that have the potential to make the work of the UN more effective or less expensive. Some of this effort over the past three years went into a successful project named iRESCUE. iRESCUE means "images for Rapid mapping, Enhanced Security and Communication for Universal Emergency services,"  and it was  fully implemented under Eurostars funding by UNOSAT, AnsuR Technologies (project coordinator) and Locus Scandinavia (project's technical advisor). The project was aimed essentially at the needs of users from the emergency response and citizen security sectors having a need for customized geo-tagged information integrating communication, imagery, and video.

UNOSAT announces new Manager
March 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - The Executive Director of UNITAR has appointed Dr. Einar Bjorgo of Norway as UNOSAT Manager after a selection process involving internal and external candidates. Bjorgo, who was serving as Senior Officer at UNITAR had been in charge of UNOSAT operations under the previous management.

Syrian refugees top 1 million as UNOSAT continues monitoring of camps
11 March 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - UNOSAT will soon enter the third year of monitoring of the Syria crisis in support of the international humanitarian community and the High-Commissioner for Refugees in particular. UNOSAT first situation maps about the unfolding of the Syrian crisis date back mid-2011. Today, the number of Syrians fleeing increasingly violent conflict has reportedly surpassed the staggering number of one million. UNHCR made known last week that resources for helping this increasing population of displaced people, 50% of whom are believed to be children mostly under 11, are dangerously scarce.
