Dear Colleagues,

Monday October 13th 2014 is International Disaster Risk Reduction Day
(Ngày Quốc tế Giảm nhẹ Rủi Ro Thiên tai) and ASEAN Day for Disaster
Management (Ngày ASEAN Quản lý Thiên tai). This year the focus is on
older people, including their needs and what they contribute to better
planning and understanding of disaster risk in their communities. IDDR
2014 intends to switch on and amplify this critical issue now and for
the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction
<http://www.preventionweb.net/posthfa>.

Many organisations are holding events across Vietnam over the coming
days to mark this event including:

  * In Central Vietnam an event will take place in Da Nang city on the
10^th October, led by Malteser International and Da Nang Peoples
Committee. The event include meeting, involving old people, people
with disability, leaders and community members and the media.
  * In the Mekong Delta an event will take place in Tien Giang Province
on 13^th October. This event will be co-organized by Save the
Children and Tien Giang People’s Committee, with support from the
Disaster Management Working Group (DMWG), led by Care International
and active collaboration with Help-Age international, DMC, UNDP and
financial support from DIPECHO. The event will include a parade,
presentations and performance, involving older people, people with
disabilities, children, leaders, wider community members and the media.
  * In Thanh Hoa Province World Vision is organizing two events on
October 13th, the first is a celebration of International Day for
Disaster Reduction(IDDR) + ASEAN Day for Disaster Management (ADDM)
in Hoang Hoa and Quang Xuong and a second event called "Writing
Letter to ASEAN Secretary General" which is a contest organized with
participation of around 900 children with the selected letters being
submitted to ASEAN Secretariat. These are a part of efforts under
the Coastal Areas of Thanh Hoa Province Resilient to Natural
Disasters (CATREND) project funded by DFAT with a lifespan of 5
    years (2011-2016).

In order to help facilitate a strong message of support towards Disaster
Risk Reduction and specifically the needs of older persons the DMWG has
collected some good case studies/examples of older persons in Disasters
which you may want to read and share at your events, these are attached
for your reference. Many thanks to the organisations for their work in
collecting, documenting and agreeing to share these stories with us.
