</b>An ERW-related accident happened just a few hours ago (9 a.m.) causing severe injuries to a boy victim. Phan Trong Hieu, a six grader (born 2002), spent his weekend morning helping his parents. He took the family cow out for some grass. While herding the
cow, he saw a metal item and picked it up to look with curiosity. Moments after that, locals nearby heard a loud explosion and rushed to the site to see what was going on.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Hieu suffers multiple, severe injuries: The blast took off his right hand, crushed his left hand, broke his thigh bone and leaving other wounds at his genital. By 12:00 Hieu received emergency surgery at the Danang General Hospital, some
30 kilometers away from the accident site.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">New ERW-related accidents with involvement of child victims has been an alarming issue in Vietnam. Clear Path International’s recorded data on new ERW-related accidents revealed that the rate of child victim (under 16) in 2012 and 2013
was 53% and 49%, respectively (not counted this new accident).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Another fact is that while the rate of new accident in Quang Tri province (known as the most contaminated province, and province with highest accident rate) is actually going down significantly in recent years -- other provinces are replacing
this top position.<o:p></o:p></p>
