Dear Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Mana,
Climate Migration VSO [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001UD3nSZ_eKXhlOJKp57X1aBZLL5_AD6fG-soVOhzQ5e_AUrxz5IkxUQ699eg9YqD4lQvjVScHjMr7fGCJCQiQ9fFzl_FjqBMkbvjb6qF-JV9NYyesVfrS_Q==]

Extreme weather events such as Superstorm Sandy provide an all-too-real edge to
the growing numbers of reports suggesting that climate change, and particularly
sea-level rise, may be occurring faster than earlier anticipated. This realization
is also providing new fodder to public and policy discussions about climate change's
likely impacts on the movement of populations, both internally and across borders.
In our latest Vital Signs Online (VSO) trend [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001UD3nSZ_eKXjI-XEpzKboSrWuXuGvmiRan6GnbHXJzh1RE6MB0BJ6OcQ6fRSpc7QU2dsBUNHIx5RMdF_TmbXhTrMtskZsSXVJb4vb4drmlL0IMEnsdyqUjnVWwUdSTywM2lQbIMq8i1k=],
Lori Hunter, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder,
suggests that while global warming may be exacerbating involuntary displacement,
for thousands of years populations have adapted to relocation with the climate
extremes of each season. Click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001UD3nSZ_eKXiCMnBXGCPPRN-gA1jN3iFwL69VBuIFfcqruQ0bSDlEGvwRs0v5PZEdXw3jmKcp9IM2z9fuLu4GoCLpkNZTEegze_StGGdjnZ9XOIXIgDinMhwcPsUOVDD2Ue1u9oUoCJRE-MP_YtCXjWy2ZXWI8n3RFAQpNit5mu6seJiIkHeXHbtW747JEcqXMpi2fNFXKpqH9FWLR6NKKhGLlHqU7kcC]

In my chapter in the upcoming State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible?,
I look at how climate change might intensify a variety of existing challenges. More
extreme weather, water stress, and loss of land can undermine habitability, food
security, and economic viability. Affected communities, regions, or countries may
be able to cope with the pressures through more drought-tolerant crops, economic
diversification, and other adaptation measures. But people may also feel the need
to move, either as a coping strategy or out of desperation.

On a related note, State of the World 2013 Co-director Erik Assadourian will be
introducing the film The Island President at the Goethe Institut in Washington,
D.C. on Monday, November 19. The documentary follows the former President of the
Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, on his quest to lobby for higher climate regulations
for industrial countries in efforts to protect low-lying countries like his own
from the imminent threats posed by rising sea levels. Click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001UD3nSZ_eKXhpBx08pYLKurh9lj8gaAuQBtFgYvDQ_YaKR03imrpRKc9xZ7shymA6yxXD8WAH-LJ7p3q1zeTNBwCsDRcB7OFfYHuMn5N3d6hreglT1qTE-SFmBkwSQWgmJoyNMBRim0aBN_uim8UCcg==]

Recent reports, as well as extreme weather events such as Superstorm Sandy, suggest
that climate change, and particularly sea-level rise, may be occurring faster than
earlier anticipated. This has increased public and policy discussions about climate
change's likely impacts on the movement of populations, both internally and worldwide.
Research suggests that when climate-related migration does occur, much of it is
short distance and within national borders, as opposed to international, according
to new analysis conducted for our Vital Signs Online service.

Obama [http://blogs.worldwatch.org/revolt/americans-vote-for-a-new-energy-future/]

After months of retrograde discussion of energy policy on the campaign trail, U.S.
voters have shown their preference for the new course set by President Obama in
his first term over Romney's fossil fuels-only approach to energy policy. Throughout
the campaign, the fossil fuel companies' arguments were undermined by the fact that,
apart from the failed cap-and-trade legislation, President Obama has a solid energy
record. President Obama's challenge in his second term is to strengthen federal
support for renewable energy while closely guarding taxpayers' money.

According to a recent report, farmers in Central America should be worried about
how climate change will impact their crops. The study, Tortillas on the Roaster,
explains that higher temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns, prompted by
climate change, could affect 1 million maize and bean farmers in the region. Predicting
an average temperature rise of one-degree Celsius by the 2020s and a two-degree
rise by the 2050s, the models used in the report also anticipate that consistency
in rainfall will change considerably, limiting access to water for the 80 percent
of Central American maize and bean farms that are on rainfed land.

The transport sector is key to a more sustainable economy, yet industrialized economies
have developed auto-centered systems that relegate public transit, as well as walking
and biking, to a mere sideshow. Investments in automobile infrastructure continue
to outpace spending for alternative modes in most countries, and production of cars
keeps expanding. Although for a short while it looked as though the growth in car
production might come to an end with the global economic crisis, output has resumed
with a vengeance, in large part because of the surge in production and sales in
emerging economies such as China, India, and Brazil.

In a new animated video, "Share Spray: A New Way to Do Everything," the Center for
a New American Dream provides a short, five-minute reminder that you don't need
magic to build community----you just have to see the world a bit differently. By
learning to share household items you don't often use, such as your tools, ladder,
and cooler, you not only reduce unnecessary purchases, but more importantly, you
build a larger network of neighbors that you can rely on and ask for help----which
is worth the time investment both in good times and bad.
