Dear Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Mana,

Michael Renner [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0012NxNnZuPrnxSTRAXuO7TX_Nr-x1oT8TeK_TXJalxM8YyJqcIKuI6tm0IdmfhZxZk-aZM8jBkeAQSRkCnCK-0VV0ZmT5JNwDyLHh0M5hwYgNsodbp6RxWqQ==]

Greetings from The Hague in the Netherlands!

I'm here this week participating in the Hague Global Institute for Global Justice's
closed workshop on climate change and conflict resolution. Joining me are other
researchers, policymakers, and NGOs from around the world to discuss causal relationships,
concepts, and the possibility of conducting future research projects on this topic.

As the world gets more of a taste of the repercussions from a destabilized climate
(think of the extended drought in the United States this year as just one example),
a key question is: how do physical changes translate into social, economic, and
political changes? Will we see rising competition over scarce resources? Food riots?
Displacements from extreme weather and sea-level rise? Adaptive migration? Will
this trigger new conflicts, or can we prevent them by increasing resilience and
cooperation?

We need to pay more attention to how environmental change plays out in the political
world, not just in terms of challenges, but also opportunities. Concerning the latter,
I will be in Oslo, Norway, next month attending the conference on The Political
Economy of Transitions----Analysis for Change, organized by the UN Development Programme
and the Norwegian Peacebuilding Resource Centre. I will be participating in a session
titled "Green Growth and Sustainability in Countries in Transition," where I will
share insights from my chapter in State of the World 2012: Moving Toward a Sustainable
Prosperity [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0012NxNnZuPrnykGeKTpVV5nQnzsGeDMoFWGGVoVmm-AJUWOHIE0XBt7xEYT55OZXxDVD1L2JSISFu4Z_AjCnnaV25CmiUirLBe9rP_XKR1Tj96Sw-MbOdSCJCpuQus13r81FIEAlApKLUcwmeouGQPsA==],
"Making the Green Economy Work for Everybody [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0012NxNnZuPrnzQ6rKJcPePlPa-hZrGbyJ_gBTouxwmzscUoOuTZxM0QyebpUoCitq_gtFZQQqaX0NBJl8M8jQdt-WnS5oqVSQ_KhNw522OMX8Ch1smtvLYN6zMjITPBXT2OWw4ycApZg0c_Zxcks078dy7peMy1NZ0qd3APqrfPvOINTPffTb6P_fqqNGVo8HthAjL_Y1iCmjPtyeW6Qrgm85R7C-YK35S]."

It's indisputable that a green economy must offer adequate numbers of good-quality
jobs in order to have traction. At a time when the world needs to create 600 million
jobs [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0012NxNnZuPrnwpLiZ6vKT4I8ZDXPKp1hBU7CTQuFZgmMJFRIQfTFCf5LoZUFJ0iA0rTUBVxQsik7-Wro5NZBMml-x-Kqs1-ul_4JzGBhVTVk8e_8yDH68RdePzX4-oyj5J_m5HtjBfAjdv9jhO4_vmj6UHQq7-mhQnIsVZVkkGHa8=]
over the next decade, when some 200 million people confront unemployment and many
others contend with insecure, dangerous, or low-paid work, it is critical that we
create sustainable and fulfilling livelihoods. In recent years there has been an
increasing focus on "green and decent jobs," a new line of thinking that emphasizes
employment that not only preserves and restores environmental quality, but also
offers workers a secure income and a perspective for the future.

I'm excited to be taking part in these events, but hope that these important dimensions
will increasingly become part of the broader public dialogue. Humanity can't afford
to relegate such discussions to specialist meetings. They are everybody's business.

At Worldwatch, we have had a longstanding commitment to the green economy and green
jobs. You can read more by visiting our Sustainable Prosperity [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0012NxNnZuPrnxghAgvXXoI7At3XA-go2sVpStw8ELCI_LnaTbQJds8KrbjNz5oPBlwBtekZoTI0rjN0IEU_E4CQl7XQRwjA-U1N3ovxjuFwzWAEYdnBM7En9XqJj4vTNFs7wsgFKRLVb-WKNXdgBBuIsVdDimMxd-V]

Coal [http://blogs.worldwatch.org/revolt/what-happened-to-king-coal/]

Figures for the first half of 2012 show a remarkable shift in U.S. energy trends.
Coal-fired power generation has plummeted to 20 percent below last year's level
and 31 percent below the peak reached in 2007. There are two primary factors behind
coal's decline. Electricity use has virtually leveled off in the United States since
2008, leaving many U.S. utilities with excess generating capacity and more latitude
to choose which of their power plants will operate. Meanwhile, the rapid decline
in U.S. natural gas prices this year has allowed utilities to fire up some of their
newer and more efficient gas plants while idling many of their coal plants.

Navdanya [http://blogs.worldwatch.org/nourishingtheplanet/what-works-saving-seeds/]

In the last several years, many governments in developing countries around the world
have cut federal agricultural investments within the seed sector. As a result, private
seed companies promoting hybrid seeds are filling in the gaps. Farmers' groups,
however, are doing their own community seed saving so they can achieve greater independence,
adapt to climate change, and rise out of poverty.

is a dirty word in growth-centric cultures like the United States. But with humanity
using 1.5 Earths' worth of biocapacity every year, if we want to stabilize the climate
and other declining ecosystem services, we'll have to stop both our populations
and the global economy from growing any larger. In business terms, degrowth sounds
even more disturbing----almost sacrilegious. But let's not forget that there are
ways to profit even from degrowth.

Last month, the Indian Parliament devised legislation to replace the archaic Land
Acquisition Act of 1894, which dictates terms for government acquisition of private
land. The new law aims to address India's chronic land disputes between developers
and local communities. The legislation is currently being reviewed due to concerns
that the conditions are too steep for industry. Among other projects, several massive
planned energy and infrastructure initiatives are waiting for the new law to be
implemented in order to move forward.

Asphalt-strewn streets and blank-faced skyscrapers dominate city landscapes. But
in recent years, cities have also become places where anything from rooftop pumpkin
patches to herb-crowded windowsills flourish. Yet cities also offer unique obstacles
for growers. Tall buildings can shade out the sun and block or redirect wind, and
space for planting might be difficult to come by. Nourishing the Planet highlights
five tips that are especially relevant to farmers, gardeners, and other agriculturalists
growing gardens in cities around the world.
