Dear Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Mana,

Worldwatch's Climate and Energy team just launched its groundbreaking Sustainable
Energy Roadmap for Jamaica, a look at the measures that the country can take to
transition its electricity sector to one that is socially, environmentally, and
financially sustainable.

The report, Jamaica Sustainable Energy Roadmap: Pathways to an Affordable, Reliable,
Low-Emission Electricity System, is the culmination of years of intensive investigation.
It analyzes the potential for energy efficiency and renewable energy deployment
in Jamaica and discusses the social and economic impacts of alternative energy pathways.

State of the World 2013 Update

Political and Social Strategies to Combat Climate Change [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Sx-_4l3nJvSX0rewbfqypUwmb12a3Ks_128Lo_vmcWovqnLsGOSWRyQLRydkQgcBonzf6pwrW-u-oOL7kMuN2R1qzROd1COIwmMlrgJutw8Wvzes7ANO91_OZoVYflMty3ld_ttbBxQ=]

Many environmentalists today miss the broader political picture by advocating for
small day-to-day "green living" acts that in reality are far more symbolic than
they are effective. The truth is that most people are proponents of a cleaner environment,
safer products and labor conditions, and a better functioning democracy-they are
just not actively working together for real change. In
State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible?, contributing authors
argue that the missing ingredient is not more individual eco-perfectionists, but
rather collective engagement for sweeping political and economic change.

Post-harvest food losses occur mainly in developing countries and can be attributed
to poor storage facilities, inadequate distribution networks, and low investment
in food production. Improved storage conditions could drastically reduce this food
waste, yet technologies must be affordable and realistic to be sustainable in these
regions. Practical Action, a nongovernmental organization that works with farmers
in Southern Africa, Latin America, and South Asia, encourages the use of earthenware
refrigerators called zeer pots to help prevent post-harvest food waste. These pots
can extend the shelf life of harvested crops by up to 20 days by reducing storage
temperature.

The 40th anniversary of the Arab Oil Embargo offers a unique opportunity to reflect
on four decades of developments in the energy sector in the United States and around
the world. In many ways, the shock of the embargo helped reshape the world energy
sector, yet four decades later many of the same problems faced in 1973 persist,
especially in the United States. To a large extent, fossil fuels continue to power
global economic growth and energy security, and the competition for these resources
remains a significant concern for governments around the world.

Since the very creation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) indicator, people have
criticized it as a poor measure of societal progress. Transcending this obsession
with GDP could help reveal that societies aren't actually better off just because
more expenditures are being made by consumers, businesses, or the government. It's
not just about changing metrics but making the hard choices of what changes we're
willing to make for a sustainable or at least somewhat stable future.

The "Jardins Partagés" or "Shared Gardens" are green spaces in urban areas where
the community plays a vital participatory role in both its development and maintenance.
Since they were first established in Lille in 1997, the phenomenon has extended
across the whole of France and today one can find shared community gardens many
French cities. This year marks the tenth year since the first shared garden was
established in Paris, which is now home to about 70 gardens.
