The Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry (BUCAF) in  cooperation with Bicol University Gubat Campus (BUGC), Bicol Consortium for Agriculture Resources Research and Development (BCARRD),  Philippine Council for Agriculture Aquatic Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB), Provincial Government of Albay-Climate Change Academy (PGA-CCA), Heifer Philippines, Bicol Consortium for Agriculture Resources Research and Development (BCARRD), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), City Government of Legaspi, City Government of Ligao and Juboken Enterprises, Inc. will hold the International Conference on Climate-Smart Knowledge Management for the Uplands, with the theme “Restoring the uplands’ integrity, securing lives and environment” which will be held on 07th - 09th of November, 2012 at Bicol University, Legazpi City, Province of Albay, Philippines.

 

 

The objectives of the conference are to i) share experiences, information and knowledge on climate-smart innovations and initiatives for the uplands; ii) develop concepts and ideas on climate-smart innovations and initiatives for the uplands leading to change; and iii) identify possible knowledge gaps and platform of actions where improvements could be made. The Conference shall feature R&D and innovations on the following thematic areas:

 

1.       Upland Environmental Governance - Efforts to mainstream disaster risk reduction concerns, ecological solid waste management, climate change mitigations and adaptations including REDD/ carbon crediting and payment for environmental services; in national, regional, provincial and local development plans.

2.      Food Security - Initiatives in managing and promoting scientifically oriented appropriate agroecological farming systems innovations for increase food and livelihood securities to enhance disaster resiliency of upland families and communities.

3.      Biodiversity, Watershed and Waterways Management - Focus on up- scaling the integrity of watersheds and waterways in enriching biodiversity, providing clean, sufficient and regulated water flows for accessible and safe drinking water for people, as well as helping build sustainable and resilient agricultural, coastal and marine ecosystems which are people’s main sources of livelihood. It also includes water utilization rights and conflict management.

4.      Sustainable Tourism and Rural Development – deals with different concepts, opportunities and risks of tourism in stimulating economic development while maintaining integrity of natural diversity in rural areas.

We hope that you and your staff would be able to present papers and posters based on the results of instruction, research, extension, development activities and innovations that are related to the aforementioned thematic areas of the conference.
