[wildtrade] VIETNAM BEAR DAY - Ending bear farming in Vietnam: Ten years of progress

In celebration of Vietnam Bear Day (May 7, 2015), ENV organized a press
conference to mark ten years of progress in working to end bear farming and
trade in Vietnam. It is one year since the successful closure of bear bile
tourism operations in Ha Long Bay, and a new ENV study indicates 61%
reduction in bear bile consumption across Vietnam over the past five years.



ENV Bear Ambassador and celebrity pop star My Linh joined Vietnam Bear Day
to emphasize the plight of Vietnam’s bears in captivity and called upon the
public to join her to put an end to bear farming in Vietnam once and for
all. The event was attended by Government agencies and both local and
international NGOs, along with more than 70 journalists and reporters from
newspapers and TV channels.



In conjunction with Vietnam Bear Day, volunteers from ENV’s 5,000-strong
national wildlife protection network also hosted “End Bear Farming and
Trade” events in 15 major cities to raise awareness and encourage people to
join the fight on behalf of Vietnam’s captive bears.
