*JOB OPPORTUNITY*: International Field Research Manager at Save Vietnam’s
Wildlife

*Position title*: International Field Research Manager
*Main duty station*: Cuc Phuong, Ninh Binh (100km away from Ha Noi)



An exciting opportunity for an experienced field researcher to work with a
front line Vietnamese organisation working to combat the illegal wildlife
trade in Vietnam. Living in Cuc Phuong National Park in northern Vietnam
you will work alongside Vietnamese researchers while building their skills
and be contributing directly to the conservation of pangolins and other
threatened species in Vietnam.



*Introduction to Save Vietnam’s Wildlife*

Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) is a national Non-Profit Organisation in
Vietnam that was established under the Vietnam Union of Science and
Technology Associations with registration license from Ministry of Science
and Technology. Save Vietnam’s Wildlife mission is to ensure a secure
future for threatened wildlife in Vietnam.



*Duration of contract: *One year, with extensions. Preference will be given
to candidates prepared to stay for 2 or more years.

*Probation period*: 3 months

*Expected starting date*: June 2016.
*Salary*: Save Vietnam’s Wildlife will provide basic salary sufficient to
cover living costs in Vietnam for duration of first contract. Extensions
will be funded through successful research project grants applied for by
Field Research Manager.

Save Vietnam’s Wildlife will provide an airfare to Hanoi, and airfare to
home country after completion of contract or, if extending, at end of
position.

Save Vietnam’s Wildlife will cover cost of the position visa and health
insurance while in Vietnam
*Work place*: Cuc Phuong National Park, Nho Quan, Ninh Binh.

*Accommodation: *Provided at Cuc Phuong National Park

*Benefits: *12 working days annual holiday following Vietnamese Labour law,
plus 10 national holiday days.

*Hours of work:* 8 hours each day 5 days a week. However, as the animals
within the centre are nocturnal it is expected that the employee may
sometimes work during the evenings. Any overtime will be accrued and time
given off in lieu.

*Working with:* Save Vietnam’s Wildlife, including staff based at Cuc
Phuong National Park and overseas; other NGO partners; government
departments; visiting researchers; and community organisations.



*Job mission: *Transfer skills and develop capacity of local research team
to ensure quality research outcomes for SVW. This will entail the
development, delivery, supervision, and fundraising of both *in situ* and *ex
situ* research projects.



*Research Priorities of SVW:*

·           The status, distribution, ecology and behaviour of SVW priority
species (including Chinese and Sunda pangolin).

·           The illegal wildlife trade of SVW priority species in Vietnam.

·           National Vietnamese conservation policy.

·           Social research on illegal wildlife trade of pangolins in
Vietnam.

·           Tracking and post release research on wildlife.



*Job activities: *The Field Research Manager will be responsible for
managing and supervising the SVW research team, as well as raising external
funds for, and developing research projects in line with organizational
objectives. Developing the capacity of the SVW research team is a priority
of this position. Specific activities are as follows:



·           Manage and deliver research project/s aligned to research
priorities of SVW.

·           Support the professional development of the SVW Vietnamese
research officers.

·           Assist Vietnamese Research Officers to join international
training courses and workshops.

·           Raising external funds for research activities and subsequent
compliance and acquittal of grants.

·           Provide technical assistance to forest rangers carrying out
field surveys.



*Essential criteria:*


* Qualifications: *

A Masters degree in a relevant science or conservation based discipline, or
equivalent work experience.

*  Knowledge and experience:*

·           A track record in producing field reports and literature
reviews in English

·           Sound knowledge of data research design, data collection, and
analysis.

·           Demonstrable experience of working on field research projects

·           Sound Knowledge of wildlife and/or habitat conservation
research

·           Experience of living and working in field conditions.

*Desirable criteria:*

·           Experience in writing successful grant applications

·           Familiar with south-east Asian conservation issues and
living/working in Vietnam/Asia

·           Driver’s license and ability to ride a motorbike

·           Ability to maintain basic equipment and vehicles

·           Some knowledge of Vietnamese would be advantageous

·           Willingness to travel as required.

·           Dynamic, effective team leadership skills with ability to work
under own initiative

·           Good communicator; able to write, speak and present with a high
level of proficiency in English

·           Excellent administration and organisational skills

·           A working knowledge of data analysis software

·           Highly motivated, good humoured and positive personality

·           Creative, adaptable and resourceful to meet the demands of a
challenging environment

·           Active, fit and healthy.
