Position: Study Doctor
Department: Viral Hepatitis Project/ Central Nervous System (CNS) Group
Location: This post is based at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.
This is a full-time job which may include travel within Ho Chi Minh City
Hours of work: Full time (37.5 hours per week from Monday to Friday)
Tenure: Initially for one year, including a 2 month probation period, with possibility of extension.

Background
The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit based in Viet Nam. We are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. We also have sister units in Kathmandu, Nepal and Jakarta, Indonesia. As a Wellcome Trust Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.
OUCRU aims to have a positive and significant impact on global health and, in particular, the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. This is being achieved via an integrated long-term research programme, contributions to training, the scientific literature, national and international meetings and membership of national and international committees. Priority is given to health issues important to the hospitals, and to Viet Nam as a whole. All work is intended not only to benefit the patients seen daily at our host hospitals, but also to help improve patient care throughout Viet Nam and the region.
The core clinical research areas of the Unit are typhoid, dengue, central nervous system infections, malaria, influenza, tuberculosis, and HIV. In addition, the Unit has
research groups in bio-statistics and mathematical modelling.

Job summary
You will join a dynamic and supportive research group running clinical and laboratory based descriptive and interventional trials. You will be based at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Ho Chi Minh City. The main focus of your work will be on clinical trials for Hepatitis C.
Key responsibilities
- Work under the direction of OUCRU investigators to ensure the successful delivery of the clinical trials and research studies of the unit
- Understand and be familiar with the study protocols and tasks - Work with hospital physicians at the study sites to recruit and manage study patients
- Communicate with study participants about their illnesses and their treatment. Answer questions about the trials, and help them manage their illnesses as appropriate.
- Collect, co-ordinate and oversee the collection of clinical data and research samples from participants at study sites. This will include performing various clinical examinations and procedures, mostly in an outpatient setting.
- Ensure that clinical case report forms are completed accurately, and collaborate with hospital staff wherever necessary.
- Help generate clinical case report forms and SOPs as needed.
- Maintain good communication with research nurses, other study physicians and collaborating hospital staff members, to ensure participants’ well-being, compliance with study protocols and quality of clinical data.
- Assist with data entry, data cleaning and data analysis
- Work with other members of the project team to identify future areas for collaboration and research.
- Assist with presenting study progress and findings to collaborators and other audiences.
- Build rapport with study sites and act as a liaison between OUCRU-VN and the site.
- Cooperate the monitoring team during their visits and answer their questions regarding patient care
- Other tasks as required.
Selection criteria
Essential:
- A Vietnamese medical doctor trained in internal medicine. Specialization in infectious diseases is an advantage
- Have practicing certificate issued by Vietnamese authority
- At least 3 years’ experience working in a Ho Chi Minh City government hospital
- Competent in basic medical procedures including history and examination, electrocardiogram interpretation and fundoscopy. Excellent skills in communication and patient care. Able to form a good rapport with patients from all backgrounds
- Ability to work closely with other study staff and hospital collaborators
- Good attention to detail in following protocols and keeping records
- Interest in clinical and/or epidemiological research
- Willing to travel within country and abroad
- A good command of English
Desirable:
- Prior experience in clinical research
- Clinical Research Experience and preferably a Master degree or at least level 1 subspecialty training
- Experience in the management of patients with Hepatitis C. Familiarity with computers, including Word and database programs
- Understanding of academic, research or not-for-profit working environment
- Able to work with a minimum of supervision
