Between 94% and 95% of grade 1 students (first class of the primary school) nationwide met the requirements of the new general education program in the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year, state media reported from the conference of Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) held on February 2. Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Huu Do said that the positive results thanks to increasing the Vietnamese language lessons from 350 to 420, helping students improve their language and reading/writing skills. One more reason was from the arrangement of teaching two sessions per day, instead of 25 lessons per week, of localities nationwide that supported students fulfill their curriculum. Also at the meeting, many delegates from localities’ education and training departments fanned concern about lacking English language and information technology (IT) teachers. They proposed the MoET soon issue the guideline on teaching skills at the primary level as well as re-regulate the teaching hours for English language and IT teachers. Regarding the issue of choosing the textbook for the next school year, Mr. Do informed that such issue will depend on the selection of localities’ People’s Committee, following the Circular 25 adopted by the MoET. For grade 2 students, the ministry asked localities to introduce new textbooks before March 15, and train teachers about new textbooks before July 31, he added. (Thanh Nien, Thanh Nien [1])
