The number of Vietnamese women in the childbearing ages (from 15 to 49) is forecast to continue rising in the next years and reach peak in 2027-2028, forecast the General Office for Population Family Planning, under the Ministry of Health. At present, the figure has hit 24.2 million people and rises by an average of nearly one million annually. The office revealed the information at an event in Hanoi on September 23 to respond to the World Contraception Day [September 26]. Head of the office Nguyen Doan Tu highlighted Vietnam’s achievements in population-family planning activities in the past decades. Notably, the work has helped lower the population by 20 million people compared to the predicted figure. Mr. Tu noted insufficient data as saying that Vietnam records 300,000-500,000 abortion cases every year. He noted that unsafe abortion is one of the reasons leading to secondary infertility. Vietnam’s population was estimated at nearly 96.21 million people as of April 1, being ranked 15th worldwide and third in Southeast Asia, according to the preliminary data from the national steering committee for 2019 general population and housing census.
