The World Wide Fund for Nature in Vietnam (WWF Vietnam), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the People’s Committee in Vietnam’s central Quang Tri province co-organized an event on March 24 to launch a campaign to call on Vietnamese people to stop eating wildlife meat, state media said.
Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee Ha Sy Dong called for actions for wildlife. He also affirmed that in the coming time, the province will promote propaganda on wild animal meat consumption and the fight against wildlife hunting, among others.
Quang Tri province has high biodiversity, with more than 110 species of mammals; nearly 200 species of birds; 83 species of amphibians and reptiles; more than 336 species of fish; and more than 2,000 species of plants. However, biodiversity degradation has been occurring, placing many rare wild animal species in a state of danger and at risk of extinction. The reasons are people’s limited awareness of wildlife conservation and the habit of consuming wild meat, among others.
