Australia Plans to Open University Branch Campuses in Vietnam

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc met with the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and the Australian Department of Education late last week to discuss the potential establishment of Australian university branch campuses in Vietnam, targeting the country’s large number of students studying abroad.

Deputy Minister Phuc emphasized that with around 200,000 Vietnamese students studying overseas, foreign universities could attract more local talent by opening branches in Vietnam. He highlighted the long-term benefits of national development.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) pledged to accelerate negotiations and ensure the earliest possible completion of agreements with the Australian side, he said.

Australian Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski noted that in early 2024, Vietnam and Australia upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with education being a key area of focus. He expressed eagerness to deepen educational cooperation by establishing Australian university campuses in Vietnam.

Ms. Karen Sandercock from the Australian Department of Education pointed out Australia’s vast experience setting up branch campuses in Asia, indicating a strong interest in collaborating with Vietnam to bring similar initiatives to the country.
