Engineering, Natural Sciences Make Up 40% of Vietnam’s Int’l Publications

Natural Sciences and Engineering lead the number of international publications in Vietnam, accounting for more than 40% of the total 18,000 papers annually, the Ministry of Education and Training announced in its report on August 9.

Of these, Natural Sciences makes up 21% and Engineering represents 20%. Computer Science followed it with 13%. Meanwhile, Life Sciences, Agriculture, and Veterinary; Mathematics; Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities; Health; and Business, Management, and Accounting make up 7%-8% of publications each.

In 2022 and 2023, Vietnam produced 18,400 and 19,400 Scopus-indexed articles, with 67 universities contributing over 82% of these publications. Leading institutions include Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

The MoET pointed out that universities receive only 6.75% of the national R&D funding despite contributing over 80% of the country’s total research and having about three-quarters of researchers with doctoral degrees. It also highlighted the limited application of research in training and the infrequent cooperation between universities and businesses in research activities.

The Ministry has urged universities to focus on key research areas aligned with their training strengths, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between universities, businesses, and research organizations. It also encouraged institutions to secure adequate funding for research, enhance scientific integrity, and incorporate intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and innovation into their curricula.
