Poor Air Quality Major Drawback in Hanoi: Top Legislator

Chairman of Vietnam’s law-making National Assembly (NA) Vuong Dinh Hue has said that environmental pollution is a pressing problem in Hanoi, which is considered amazing in the eyes of many foreigners, except for its air quality.

NA Chairman Hue made the statement during a discussion on the draft amended Capital Law at the NA Standing Committee’s 31st session held in Hanoi on Thursday.

He underlined the need to set out emission standards for motorcycles in an attempt to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion.

The top legislator added that a large number of foreigners prefer living in Hanoi but the capital city’s unhealthy air quality is a major hindrance to them.

Addressing the session, Dinh Tien Dung, chief of the municipal Party Committee, stressed the need to ramp up efforts to improve the environment of the Vietnamese capital.

He added that a shortfall of environmental standards and tariff regulations has posed challenges to the development of key infrastructure projects in the city.

He cited an example of the lack of standards for e-car charging stations, saying that such a dearth could lead to wastefulness of land and investment.
