Shrimp Specialist to Support Certification and Sustainable Mangrove and Shrimp Models in Ca Mau

Location: Based in Ca Mau with frequent travel to HCM and other provinces

SNV has been working in Vietnam since 1995. Using market based approaches, SNV is committed to reducing poverty by catalyzing environmentally sustainable solutions for the poor in agriculture, energy, water & sanitation, and REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation).

SNV Vietnam introduced a new project in Ca Mau which examines the role of sustainable financing to reduce pressures on mangroves and support mangrove rehabilitation. This project will work in collaboration with IUCN who will lead on the work package on adaptation and market linkages. In addition, the project aims to supporting mangrove restoration models for enhancing carbon stock for avoids deforestation; livelihood improvement on degraded mangroves: conditions for shrimp certification; and support province for creating enable conditions for markets from the ecosystem services and policy recommendations.
SNV is seeking a highly qualified national candidate for the position of Shrimp Specialist to support certification and sustainable mangrove and shrimp models, who will work closely with our partners in province, districts and communes, Aquaculture Program Leader, Project Manager of the Mangroves and Markets (MAM), and the SNV Vietnam REDD+ Team. 

Responsibilities

- Ensure achievement of the project outputs and activities:
- Shrimp certification and sustainable shrimp and mangrove model in the project sites;
- Assist restoration of mangroves and policy establishment;
- Support for establishing and monitoring provincial advisory group, capacity building activity (workshop, training);
- Logistic support for organizing activities in province;
- Prepare regular reports, technical reports and work plans as required;
- Provide input into the Project, in particular with respect to:
- Understanding of shrimp and mangrove relevant models that need assistance ;
- Assess existing practices on shrimp cultivation and certification for supporting the piloting of shrimp certification;
- Sustainable shrimp and sustainable mangrove restoration models implementation;
- Technical advice for local farmers at project sites;
- Coordinate closely with government partners; project supervisors and relevant staff to ensure successful implementation;
- Work with private sector organisations and government agencies to identify potential improvements in market mechanisms in the value chain
- Provide support to   foreseeing and development of further programs in the Mekong Delta

Candidate profile

- Vietnamese citizen;
- University degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries science or other relevant discipline
- Knowledge of the issue of Mangroves and shrimp cultivation and management, certification schemes
- Basic understanding of REDD+;
- At least 5 years of relevant working experience in shrimp cultivation, management project/study or certification for shrimp;
- Experience in working,  organizing, consulting with local stakeholders (province, district, commune and aquaculture division/DARD system) that included community participation
- Expertise in relevant development approaches like participative approaches, multi-stakeholder processes;
- Good ability to track, record and manage all field activity and modelling/study;
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills (English and Vietnamese)
- Demonstrated and proven record to work in a multidisciplinary team under changeable and complex circumstances;
- Good computer skills in MS-applications (Word, Excel, Internet, Email, Power Points)

Contract Duration: SNV Vietnam offers a one-year associate consultancy contract with the possibility of extension up to 3 years and a competitive salary package.

Desired start date: November, 2012
