Research Coordinator (RC)
HealthBridge is a Canadian NGO with the overall goal of improving health and health equity through research, policy and action among vulnerable populations in developing countries. HealthBridge Vietnam has projects in the areas of nutrition, gender equality, reproductive health, tobacco control, and cancer control. HealthBridge is leading an IDRC-funded projects entitled “Nutrition and Food Security in Uplands of Vietnam and Thailand” for a period of 3 years from March 2013 to February 2016. The goal of the project is to identify local and practical solutions to improve nutrition and food security amongst smallholder farmers in rural upland communities in Vietnam and Thailand through nutrition-sensitive agriculture solutions.
As such, HealthBridge Vietnam is in need of a Research Coordinator (RC) to support the implementation of this project in Vietnam and Thailand. Based in Hanoi, and working closely with the Project Lead and Project Manager in Ottawa, the RC will have overall responsibility for implementing the project and coordinating with Project Leads at Chiang Mai University (CMU), Hanoi University of Agriculture (HUA), and Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry (HUAF).
SCOPE OF WORK
The RC will be based at HealthBridge Vietnam office in Hanoi and have responsibility for overall implementation of the project “Nutrition and Food Security in Highlands of Vietnam and Thailand”. The RC will be the lead coordinator of the three partners, ensuring that the project is implemented in a timely and effective manner, and will assist with management and administrative components in collaboration with the Project Manager in HealthBridge Ottawa. The RC will be responsible for coordinating project trainings and workshops, will lead nutrition training, and will provide nutrition technical support to project partners; coordinate and follow up the progress of project implementation as well as responsible for budget management. Specifically:
1. The RC will know and understand the research protocol, be able to communicate the research protocol, coordinate implementation of research protocol with research teams and report to the Project Management Team (PMT) deviations from the protocol.
2. The RC will conduct trainings in Vietnam (and in Thailand if necessary) on nutrition promotion and education, on nutrition monitoring, and others as identified.
3. The RC will accompany research teams to the field for periodic monitoring visits, and as often as needed to offer support with nutrition promotion, monitoring, and evaluation.
4. The RC will facilitate the sharing of research data and findings between the research sites.
5. The RC will contribute to the writing of all project reports, review all partner reports and be responsible for compiling and synthesizing research site reports into one cohesive report in accordance with IDRC requirements.
6. The RC will maintain regular communication with research teams at CMU, HUA and HUAF, and with the PMT in Ottawa; propose, coordinate and lead all online team meetings.
7. The RC will be responsible for managing HealthBridge Vietnam’s project related expenses, reviewing financial reports from all research sites, and ensuring required documentation is collected, in accordance with IDRC requirements.
Additionally, the RC will:
1. Participate in data management and analysis, including data cleaning and analysis.
2. Assist with the development of materials for presentations at meetings and conferences, and publications.
3. Represent HealthBridge Vietnam at meetings and conferences as required.
4. Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements:
1. The RC will have at least 3 years working on nutrition-related interventions in Vietnam or Thailand.
2. The RC will have a Master’s degree in nutrition, agriculture or a related discipline.
3. The RC will have experience in research projects, especially in field trials, including experience with data collection and analysis.
4. The RC will be fluent in speaking and writing Vietnamese, and English.
5. The RC will be able to travel nationally and to Thailand on short notice and for extended periods, and to manage with minimal comforts during these periods.
Desirable
1. Ability to speak Thai and the indigenous languages of the people at the project sites.
2. Familiar with rural life in Vietnam and Thailand, ideally having lived on a farm.
3. Experience with project management and administration.
