Translator-Interpreter
Chemonics International is immediately seeking qualified Vietnamese national candidates for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Governance for Inclusive Growth assistance program in Vietnam. We are seeking Translator/Interpreter candidates to support the Government of Vietnam’s efforts to facilitate broad-based, sustainable growth.
INDICATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION
The Translator-Interpreter will ensure that all program-related documents for external distribution are professionally translated into the target language and accurately reflect the content and main intent of the author(s). The position coordinates closely with the relevant GIG technical team member(s) for suitable Vietnamese technical terms, definitions, concepts, etc., as appropriate to insure technical fidelity. The position works under the overall supervision of the Operations and Grants Director.
Principal duties and responsibilities include:
- Provide accurate and timely translation for various technical and administrative program-related documents
- Serve as a facilitator and interpreter for meetings between long-term and short-term project experts and local counterparts and/or beneficiaries, especially with Vietnamese GIG partners, as necessary
- Perform overall quality assurance of all GIG Program Vietnamese language documents and products developed for external and/or official distribution, assuming the function of chief editor
- Serve as a key point of contact for all interpreting and translation services of the GIG Program
- Assist with the drafting of formal legal translations for program operations
- Provide other program-related translation, facilitation, and interpretive services as required by supervisor
- Travel within Vietnam, as needed, to provide the services described above
- Perform other duties consistent with GIG Program objectives, technical skills of the position and as required by supervisor.
PLACES OF WORK
Main place of work will be Hanoi, Vietnam. Travel inside the country is expected as required by program activities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY COMPETENCIES
The Translator-Interpreter should have:
- At least four years of active English-Vietnamese language translation and interpretation experience in a professional office setting
- Experience in managing work flow and supervising work of translation-interpretation services
- Experience with a foreign-based company or interest required
- Experience with Vietnamese government interpretation and translation experience a plus
- Ability to conduct simultaneous interpretation desired; ability to conduct accurate and efficient relay interpretation required
- Past experience with legal translation and translation of complex documents from English to Vietnamese and vice-versa required
- Proven familiarity with US and Vietnamese cultural standards, customs, and norms required.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
- Education: Advance linguistic-related degree preferred; Bachelors linguistic-related degree required.
- Language Skills: Excellent/fluent written and spoken English and Vietnamese required. Regional local language familiarity a plus.
