About FSPPM

Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management (FSPPM) is the first academic unit of the Fulbright University Vietnam. FSPPM’s mission is to advance transformative, innovative and inclusive public policy and management in Vietnam and the region – through its commitment toward excellence in teaching, research and civic engagement. In July 2019, FSPPM becomes the first Southeast Asian institution to be accredited by NASPAA (Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administrations).

Roles and Responsibilities

Despite international consensus on economic successes over the past decades, Vietnam has faced many existential environmental threats. Rapid urbanization and rural-urban migration, increasing reliance on fossil fuels in the power sector, universal use of private transport, and poor urban planning have caused a great pressure on air quality, water quality, and public health.

Those problems are especially severe in the Mekong River Delta, where the low terrain and susceptibility to climate change adds an extra dimension of challenge to its long-term development prospect. Exposure to sea level rises, saline intrusion, annual floods, and extreme weather has been a constant drag on the regional economy whose agriculture and natural resources exploitation remains an integral part of local livelihoods.

These developments are not helped by transboundary cooperation, especially regarding the construction of a cascade of hydropower plants in the upstream Mekong River and rapid agricultural expansion in the Lower Mekong Basin.

To deepen its research and policy advocacy in the region, the Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management is looking for two Post-Doctoral Fellows for a five-year program on environmental sustainability in Vietnam. Research and teaching at FSPPM rely on a diverse interest and skills of a multi-functional fellow. The Fellows are expected to possess the following abilities and qualifications:

  • Developing and implementing ground-breaking research aiming at critical environmental issues, particularly in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam, and formulating appropriate policy responses.
  • Supporting the improvement and delivery of academic curriculum for the flagship Master in Public Policy program, the first program in the region having obtained accreditation from the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).
  • Collaborating with diverse stakeholders to advance evidence-based policy dialogues.

Other duties

  • Contributing to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the School; helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Dean which may be adjusted from time to time.

What we offer

  • We offer a competitive salary, high-end insurance schemes, and a generous annual leave entitlement.
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to join our growing interdisciplinary and dynamic team of economists, legal practitioners, and data scientists as full-time faculty upon successful completion of the project.

Qualifications

What we look for in prospective candidates:

  • A doctoral degree by the time of employment in a relevant field such as economics, public policy, environmental sciences, or engineering with a focus on agricultural systems, water, land use, forestry, energy, climate change, remote sensing, public health, epidemiology, and computer science
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration across multiple fields
  • An excellent command of English. Fluency in the Vietnamese language is a plus.

Application Instructions

  • Interested candidates should send a cover letter describing their interest, along with a detailed curriculum vitae, a job market paper (if applicable), graduate school transcript, evidence of teaching effectiveness (if any), and 2-3 letters of reference
  • The positions are open until filled, please apply by 30 January 2022 for fullest consideration.
