Project Officer for Environmental and Social Due Diligence in Supply Chains

The Initiative Global Solidarity (IGS) is a global project with project locations in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Viet Nam. In Viet Nam it works closely with the regional FABRIC project that supports the Asian textile industry in its transformation towards fair production for people and the environment. The IGS aims at empowering companies to setup effective due diligence systems in their supply chains. While consumer increasingly demand sustainability violations in global value chains remain because producers and buyers often lack the required capacities.

The IGS will foster industry wide dialogue to develop and pilot models of shared responsibility, greater data transparency and in-house and industry-wide complaint mechanisms. The project will also establish a Responsible Business Hub to act as a helpdesk for producers in setting up due diligence processes and match them with qualified service providers. The project focuses on two key sectors: textile and garment as well as electronics.

The project is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the following position:

Project Officer
for Environmental and Social Due Diligence in Supply Chains
Duty station: Hanoi, Viet Nam
Duration: 01 May (or earlier) 2022 until 30 April 2024 with possibility for extension.

The Project Officer will be responsible to:

  • Develop and implement activities to improve awareness, strategies and actions addressing the sustainability performance of supply chain actors in Vietnam
  • Develop and strengthen cooperation among stakeholders in the private sector and government, fosters relationships and supports capacity development on social and environmental due diligence
  • Represents the project and GIZ towards stakeholders, the private sector and related government institutions and ensures effective communication and collaboration between the project and stakeholders

In this context, he/ she will fulfill the following tasks:

  • Develop concepts, approaches and activities to strengthen due diligence in line with the overall project objectives and its indicators in close coordination with the team leader and other team members of the IGS and FABRIC team in Vietnam
  • Provide technical advisory to improve sustainability in the garment/textile and electronics supply chain in close coordination with relevant actors (e.g. international and national private sector, associations, NGOs etc.)
  • Develop Terms of Reference and technically managing international and national consultants to ensure highest quality and cooperation
  • Conduct and support data collection, analysis and assessments with regard to sustainability of supply chains in Vietnam, particularly in the textile/garment and electronics sector
  • Coordinates with and provides technical advisory to partners from the private sector, business associations as well as partner organizations from NGOs, academia, service providers to enhance environmental due diligence and sustainability management in Vietnam
  • Supports relevant capacity development formats as well as country-specific and regional events/workshops/roundtables in the field of sustainable supply chains and represents GIZ at local stakeholder events
  • Supports the monitoring and evaluation of the project activities
  • Contributes to the knowledge management of the project by collecting and adequately distributing information and relevant communication material about the activities
  • Supports global activities in close coordination with the team leader and other country teams of the project

Minimum Requirements:

  • University degree in Business Administration, Economics, Political or Cultural science, Environmental Management, Textile Engineering, Sustainable supply chain management or other relevant disciplines
  • At least 7 years of professional work experience in related positions of increasing responsibility, preferably with the private sector and/or third-party certifier and/or development cooperation and/or sustainability consulting
  • Strong project management skills and experience with the initiation, planning, budgeting, execution, monitoring of projects and other project management tasks
  • Working experience in the textile/garment and/ or electronics sector and a relevant network would be considered a distinct advantage
  • Knowledge of relevant topics and international discussions of sustainability in supply chains, due diligence, social and environmental standards
  • Understanding of relevant environmental risk profiles, networks, supply chains and capacity development issues in supply chains in Vietnam and globally
  • Strong networking capability and good communication skills with stakeholders from development sector, NGOs, private sector and government, enabling collaboration to achieve joint objectives
  • Pro-active and self-driven individual
  • Proven ability to work in a team, also in intercultural contexts
  • Strong critical, analytical thinking and structured working abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills; knowledge of Chinese would be an advantage
