POSITION SUMMARY:

BACKGROUND:

Friends for International TB Relief (FIT) is a registered non-profit organization working in the field of TB prevention and care service delivery, research, technical assistance and advocacy. FIT is a young, dynamic and growing organization.  We work in close collaboration with Provincial and National TB Programmes and other in-country partners to implement projects funded by the Stop TB Partnership’s TB REACH initiative, USAID, US CDC, CDC Foundation and other donor agencies.  We also have multiple active research partnerships with academic institutions, including with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK and the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.  FIT staff have supported the implementation of other TB programs in South and Southeast Asia, and represented Viet Nam at multiple regional and international forums on TB technical assistance.  Finally, FIT has represented civil society organizations from Viet Nam at regional events and at multiple events in the lead up to and during the United Nations High Level Meeting on TB in New York City. The Research Manager will work with FIT and interface with UNOPS, the Stop TB Partnership and McKinsey to complete the following work:  

  • Identify which services, across the TB care journey, can be more decentralized, integrated, and people-centered and select product innovations, including digital health technologies and adjacent solutions, that will facilitate this shift;
  • Accelerate the sustainable roll-out (introduction, adoption, and scale-up) of country-selected product innovations (within five (5) years with bilateral, domestic, and/or multilateral resources); and
  • Connect and link country-selected, rolled-out products with a country’s information/case- based management system.

The research manager should be familiar with organizing and implementing qualitative research. Prior experience with TB and/or Human Centered Design (HCD) concepts will be advantageous. HCD is a “problem-solving technique that puts real people at the center of the development process, enabling you to create products and services that resonate and are tailored to your audience’s needs.” In this role, the manager will spend 80% of their time coordinating the implementation of the HCD process and 20% of their time supervising other surveys and research studies. During the 3-month HCD process, travel within Viet Nam will be frequent. The position may also include infrequent travel to Uganda and Switzerland.  

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    HCD process (80% FTE)

  • Prepare an institutional review board (IRB) application for HCD process
  • Assemble and mentor a Community Ambassador Cohort consisting of TB survivors,
  • TB-affected people, care providers
  • Participate in project planning meetings and capacity building activities on HCD
  • Assist a supplier with ecosystem mapping
  • Provide logistical coordination for up to four workshops
  • Coordinate logistics for the implementation of the HCD process
  • Provide detailed feedback on tools developed in the HCD process
  • Assist with a market scan of potential product innovations
  • Help evaluate impact, fit and feasibility of scale-up for product innovations
  • Conduct qualitative interviews and stakeholder feedback sessions on product innovations
  • Interface with donors and key stakeholders
  • Disseminate results within Viet Nam
  • Draft quarterly donor reports

2.    Research implementation (20% FTE)

  • Maintain strict standards of patient confidentiality and access to patient-identifiable information;
  • Train staff on study protocols and SOPs;
  • Monitor staff to ensuring they are following best practices for airborne infection control while conducting interviews;
  • Oversee recruitment and follow-up of surveys;
  • Ensure high levels of data quality and completeness;
  • Ensure proper sampling in study sites;
  • Conduct data quality monitoring;
  • Complete donor-reporting narrative updates for monthly & quarterly reports;
  • In collaboration, modify .do files for analyses;
  • Assist with drafting and finalizing manuscripts.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENT:

  • Bachelor’s degree with four years of relevant experience or Master’s degree required
  • Fluent in Vietnamese and English
  • Excellent communication skills with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity and comfort with using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Flexibility across a range of field- and office-related tasks
  • Good attitude, self-motivated, and ability to work well individually as well as in teams
  • Highly motivated, willing to learn, service-oriented, attention to detail and able to work under high pressure and within a limited time frame
