ILRI Vacancy: Research Officer I – Vietnam (Closing date: 3 July 2024)

International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruits a One Health Research Officer to support the two projects in Vietnam. The main purpose of the job is to coordinate the implementation of the ICT4Health and CGIAR initiative One Health Zoonoses Work package in Vietnam.

ILRI works to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 11 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, ILRI has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Background

ILRI is implementing a One Health research for development project portfolio in Vietnam and in Southeast Asia to addressing the threats of zoonotic diseases, AMR and foodborne diseases. Two projects that are part of this portfolio are i) the Improving human health through sustainable value chains in human-animal-environmental interactions using ICT in Vietnam (ICT4Health) funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Republic of Korea and ii) the CGIAR Initiative on Protecting Human Health through a One Health Approach (CGIAR One Health initiative). These 2 projects aim to strengthen the capacities of national partners in surveillance, early detection and emergency response, disease prevention and control and laboratory science (serology and diagnostics). The project will inform policy formulation to improve the management of transboundary animal and emerging zoonotic diseases at the interface of human, wildlife, livestock and environment.

ILRI recruits a One Health Research Associate to support the two projects in Vietnam. The main purpose of the job is to coordinate the implementation of the ICT4Health and CGIAR initiative One Health Zoonoses Work package in Vietnam.

Key responsibilities:

The research associate will support the implementation of two projects in the province of Dong Nai, Hoa Binh and Lao Cai province in collaboration with the different national partners and institutions.

  • Support the project coordinator/postdoc fellow and admin team in project related issues, as required
  • Coordinate, support and prepare for field activities in Dong Nai, Hoa Binh and Lao Cai province related to budgeting, logistic arrangement from ILRI side
  • Implement data collection and to assist in research analysis and reporting
  • Liaise with local partners and community groups in research planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation
  • Work closely with PhD students from 2 projects and national partners to support the implementation
  • Ensure an efficient communication flow between local partners and the Vietnam country team
  • Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned by work supervisors

Requirements:

  • Master in epidemiology, veterinary medicine, livestock, agriculture, public health or related disciplines. PhD degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 2-year experience in similar position
  • Experience in One Health approach
  • Working experience with livestock systems and in the field of veterinary medicine
  • Experience in participatory research and management of field trials is preferred
  • Experience with field work, data collection and analysis
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Capacity to work independently in remote areas and able to cope with heavy intermittent workloads extending beyond office hours
  • Willingness to travel and to spend time in the field
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary and international team, very good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Vietnamese
  • Publication record (conference or paper) is preferred

Position location: LRI’s Hanoi Office, Vietnam.

Terms of appointment: This position is at job level HG13 and it is only open to Vietnam nationals. The position is a 2-year fixed term contract. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances.
