Drought at Peak Dry Season Impacts over 20,000ha of Farmland

About 20,090ha of farmland and over 2,600 households have been hit by drought and water scarcity in the central region, Central Highlands, and southeastern region in Vietnam, which are now in the peak period of the 2023 - 2024 dry season.

The provinces with affected farmland include Binh Thuan 365ha in the south central region, Kon Tum 57ha, Gia Lai 219ha (including 89ha of rice and other crops completely destroyed), Dak Lak 2,056ha, and Lam Dong 660ha in the Central Highlands, along with Binh Phuoc 9,115ha in the southeast, said the Department of Water Resources under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Vietnam Supports Global Agreement on Plastic Pollution

A delegation of Vietnamese negotiators joined those from 176 countries worldwide at the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) on plastic waste in Ottawa, Canada, on April 23.

This session is to work towards finalizing an agreement on a global treaty to eliminate plastic pollution by the end of this year. To achieve this goal, negotiators will need to reach a comprehensive legally binding compromise on plastic waste.

Vietnam Danang City Plans to Set up Management Board of Special-Use Forests

The People’s Committee in Vietnam’s central Danang City plans to establish a joint-management board of the special-use forests (SUF), including Son Tra and Ba Na-Nui Chua nature reserves as well as landscape-protected South Hai Van to control illegal behaviors and violations in protected forests, local media said.

The introduction of the new unit is expected to limit residents, visitors, or poachers illegally entering the forests, said the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, adding that strict rules will help the management board build stronger powers and law enforcement in tackling illegal snares and negative impacts on natural reserves and wildlife habitats.

Vietnamese Localities to Expand Activities to Develop Carbon Credit Market

Localities across Vietnam plan to expand their activities to develop the carbon credit market towards policies on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, allocating emission quotas, trading carbon credits, and creating green financial resources for the country, local media reported.

Central Quang Binh province plans to evaluate eligible areas and estimate the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by implementing new forest planting activities according to international standards and converting small wood plantations to larger ones to increase forest carbon reserves in the future, said Deputy Director of the provincial Forest Protection Department Nguyen Van Duan.

Vietnam always wants to promote cooperation with the U.S. in various sectors, including education and training, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc said.

Mr. Phuc made the statement at a meeting in Hanoi on April 19 with the Chairman of Fulbright University Vietnam and the external evaluation team from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Three "bottlenecks" in the development of Vietnam’s preschool education are financial resources, teacher workforce, and unequal access to preschool education, according to the government office’s announcement about the conclusion of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at a working session in Hanoi on April 22.

Under the conclusion, PM Chinh highlighted the need for strong changes to mechanisms, policies, mobilization, and allocation of resources to make a breakthrough in the development of preschool education, especially policies on taxes, land access, credit, and socialization issues.
