UNICEF’s representative in Vietnam Silvia Danailov praised Vietnam’s decision to waive tuition fees for public school students from preschool through high school, stressing it as a critical step toward equitable education for all children, state media reported.
Ms. Danailov described the tuition-free policy as essential for Vietnam’s long-term development, helping students complete their education irrespective of their socioeconomic status.
She underscored the importance of ensuring sufficient resources accompany increased enrollment, calling for quality teaching, upgraded facilities, and adequate educational materials.
To ensure effectiveness, the UNICEF representative recommended Vietnam provide targeted support to vulnerable students, including children with disabilities and ethnic minorities, ensuring they fully benefit from the policy. She suggested expanding the number of public high schools and improving smaller community-based primary schools to enhance educational access.
Additionally, UNICEF expressed readiness to support Vietnam by improving teacher training, introducing digital learning platforms, and leveraging artificial intelligence technologies. Ms. Danailov also recommended investment in environmentally sustainable schools and curricula to address climate change and develop green skills among students.
