Vietnam Shifts HIV Care Strategy with “Fourth 90” Target

The "Fourth 90" target marks a strategic change in Vietnam's approach to HIV care and treatment, with a focus on people living with HIV, said Assoc. Prof.-Dr. Phan Thi Thu Huong, head of the Vietnam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC).

Assoc. Prof.-Dr. Thu Huong made the evaluation at the workshop "Achieving the 'Fourth 90' Target - Quality of Life and Well-being for People Living with HIV and Key Populations in Vietnam," held in the northern province of Ninh Binh on May 7-8.

Health Ministry Recalls Brain Cancer Batch without Vietnamese Instructions

The Drug Administration of Vietnam (DAV) under the Ministry of Health has requested the recall of a batch of Temozolomide Ribosepharm 100 mg used to treat certain types of brain cancer due to the lack of Vietnamese-language instructions, local media reported.

This batch was manufactured on August 17, 2022, with an expiry date of August 31, 2025. The drug is produced by Germany’s Haupt Pharma Amareg GmbH and imported by Nam Linh Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Company Limited in Ho Chi Minh City.

The batch of drugs violated regulations at level 3, said DAV Deputy Director Ta Manh Hung.

Doctors Perform First Kidney Transplant in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region

Over 20 doctors at Can Tho Central General Hospital have successfully performed the first kidney transplant in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region after four years of preparation, local media reported.

The transplant took place on April 25 and the hospital announced it on May 9 after the patient's health stabilized. The recipient is a 34-year-old male patient, a teacher from Ben Tre province, who had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for six years and undergoing internal medicine treatment. The donor was the patient's brother.

Vietnam PM Demands Stronger Carbon Credit Management

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued a directive to request relevant authorities to bolster carbon credit supervision and management to effectively implement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), local media reported.

Accordingly, ministries were tasked with collaborating to promptly establish a national carbon credit registry system and assessing the potential for emission reduction as well as carbon absorption from forests, providing a foundation for international forest carbon credit exchange efforts.

Vietnam Ministry Supplements Regulations on Greenhouse Gas Emission Quotas

The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has supplemented regulations on the roadmap for allocating greenhouse gas emission quotas in the draft decree and draft circular related to greenhouse gas emission reduction and ozone layer protection, local media said.

The ministry noted that it is necessary to strengthen the greenhouse gas inventory to support quota allocation to a number of specific subjects.

Accordingly, thermal power, steel, and cement sectors will have their greenhouse gases inventoried in a new and more detailed form. Around 200 establishments in the three fields are expected to be allocated quotas in the 2025-2026 period.

Vietnam Deputy PM Demands More Accurate, Timely Natural Disaster Forecasts

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang requested relevant authorities and localities to implement more accurate and timely forecasts to minimize damage caused by natural disasters at a national conference on natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue in Hanoi on May 10, local media said.

Associate Professor Hoang Ngoc Vinh, former director of the Department of Vocational Training, under the Ministry of Education and Training, has pointed out three reasons leading to the loopholes in university accreditation in Vietnam, the local Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.

The first reason is the shortage of specific standards for professional and highly applied fields such as engineering and technology, medicine, education, and law.

The second reason is that accreditation reviewers are trained and certified with general knowledge and skills, making them very difficult to evaluate a specific program at a deep professional level.

Vietnam sent 12 robotics teams to compete in the prestigious VEX Robotics World Championship 2024 in the United States from April 25 to May 3, clinching spots in the Top 10 across all competitions and bringing home six coveted prizes, local media reported.
