With the funding received from RHF, CRS has been supporting the Children First project in Quang Nam and Quang Tri for three years. The USAID’s Avian and Pandemic Influenza Initiative (USAID/APII) is a four-year project implemented by Abt Associates Inc. in Viet Nam. This project is to strengthen the capabilities of the Government of Vietnam and its counterparts to identify, prevent, and control outbreaks of avian influenza and other emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases. Activities are implemented nationally in year four but for the most part were in focused provinces; Can Tho, Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Kien Giang, and Quang Tri in years two and three.
The Lifestart Foundation is a grassroots, not-for-profit charity that helps disadvantaged Vietnamese people and their families to become self-sufficient. Founded in 2000 by Australian Karen Leonard and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Foundation applies a holistic approach to helping those in need through proven working programs and initiatives which are designed to effect a generational change.The team works to create sustainable and ongoing income streams for the disadvantaged via education and vocational training schemes. Those with complex disabilities are given improved opportunities through the Lifestart Foundation Workshop and the Lifestart Foundation Free Disability Community Centre.
Together with the provincial initiatives on tourism development, the ILO is addressing this challenge through the “Strengthening of Inland tourism in Quang Nam Project”, from June 2011 to December 2013. The overall aim of the project is to utilize Quang Nam’s tourism sector as a driver for poverty reduction in the province, especially for individuals (primarily, but not exclusively women and youth) from disadvantaged regions of the province, in a two-pronged manner: bringing the tourists to the communities and provide hospitality and other income-generating services; and linking the poor in the mountainous communities to the tourism industry by creating markets linkages and building their capacity in producing and selling locally made products.
